Detroit’s SOUP Event
Detroit’s SOUP Event is Serving Up Innovative Ideas
Soup. It sounds simple enough, but what’s coming out of this Detroit kitchen is much more than a meal. Once a month, in neighborhoods throughout the city people from the community are coming together for a bowl of soup, justDetroit’s SOUP event - Tumbull and Porter Hotel
$5 at the door. Food isn’t the main course of these SOUP events though; the city is. During each meal, four different presenters share their ideas for projects that would benefit Detroit— anything from potential jobs, art in the community or ideas for education. Gathering around tables, neighbors come together to discuss and share ideas, and the night ends with a vote for the best project of the night, all of the soup profits going to kick-start their project.
Founded by Amy Kaherl, the event has been running since 2010 and has raised over $85,000 for projects in Detroit. Not only have her efforts led to revitalizing Detroit, her ideas have led many other communities around the nation to start SOUP events of their own. Amy Kaherl shares, “We are ready to listen to, and collaborate with, people who want to make Detroit better—from a 12-year-old boy who wants a clean park next to his school, to a 40-year-old woman who wants to help others learn financial literacy. The opportunities are open for anything to happen!”
